The 1954 Yearbook XI

This is the Yearbook XI. A team made of the best players born in the year 1954.

The year produced some notable players like the 1980 European champions Schumacher and Stielike and the World Cup winners Marco Tardelli (82 with Italy) and Mario Kempes (78 with Argentina). Trevor Francis was the first one million pound transfer, bought by Brian Clough, to Nottingham Forest, he scored the only goal in the 1979 European Cup final. In defence we have Phil Thompson, 3 times European Cup winner with Liverpool. In the heart of midfield is Socrates. Not the most honoured player but a great presence and captain in one of the best ever Brazilian teams.

Player descriptions:

GK: Toni Schumacher; was regarded as one of the world's best goalkeepers in the 1980s, when he won the European Championship with West Germany and was runner-up for his country in successive FIFA World Cups in 1982 and 1986. He was awarded Bundesliga player of the year twice in 1984 and 86.
RB: Eric Gerets; was regarded as one of the top right backs in Europe at his peak and is considered one of the greatest players in Belgian football history. He arrived at PSV at the age of 31 where he played over 200 games an won 6 championships. He captained PSV to their only European Cup succes in 1988*. "The bravery, courage and heart he offered on the pitch earned him a nickname: “The Lion (of Flanders)"
CB: Uli Stielike; usually played as a central midfielder, although he was also capable of playing as a sweeper. A combative and imposing player, he was well known for his stamina, positioning, commitment, and footballing intelligence. Stielike is one of a small handful of playerso have played in all three European club finals (the European Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup), the FIFA World Cup Final and the UEFA European Championship Final.
CB: Phil Thompson; a decorated ballplaying centreback, who won 7 English league titles and 3 European Cups with Liverpool.
LB: Junior; was highly regarded for his elegance, leadership, and tactical intelligence, as well as his ability to get forward, provide precise crosses for his teammates, or strike on goal. He ended his career as a beach soccer player, where he scored over 200 goals for Brazil. He played as 46 years old in the 2000 Beach World Cup and was the top goalscorer.
RM: Trevor Francis; was one of the best players of his generation. He was a striker with acceleration and style who was always very dangerous around the penalty area.
CM: Marco Tardelli; was a hard tackling and an intelligent defensive midfielder. His ability on the field to contribute offensively made him a tough opponent to go up against. During the 80s he was highly regarded as one of the best midfielders.
CM: Socrates; was an elegant, talented, and technical playmaker, known for his great through passes, precise long balls, link-up play, and his vision on the field, as well as his physical strength; he was also a two-footed player.
LM: Giancarlo Antognoni; was a skillful and creative offensive playmaker, regarded as one of the best Italian players of all time in his position. Started all matches in Italy's route to the 1982 World Cup triumph. But got injured in the semifinal against Poland and didn't participate in the final. He contributed with three assist in 6 matches.
FW: Mario Kempes; was famous for his work ethic, he primarily shot from outside the penalty area due to the surging runs me made towards goal and unlike the typical center-forward, he didn’t operate just inside the box. This was advantageous as many defenders found this attacking style hard to cope with. Wearing what would become perhaps the most iconic jersey in all of football, Argentina’s number ten, he did not portray the qualities of a traditional playmaker. Although he was blessed with exquisite ball control, he preferred being on the end of the final ball, as opposed to playing it, and, inspired by his father, became a center-forward. A prolific goalscorer, at club level he is best known for playing for Valencia, amassing 116 goals in 184 league games for the club.
FW: Roberto Dinamite; had a career as centre forward spanning over twenty years. He is Vasco da Gama's player with the most appearances and all-time top goalscorer, as well as the overall leading scorer in the Brazilian Série A. Was involved as a reserve in the 1978 and 82 World Cups.
